About Feed Iowa First
Feed Iowa First was founded by Sonia Kendrick in 2011 on her summer break from college.  The Alliance Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa let her use their land to grow an acre garden to provide fresh vegetables to food banks.

The health and well being of Iowa's less fortunate was her initial reason for growing the garden, but after seeing the response of the recipients and the community, she believed she could use this model to make a real change in Iowa's food system.

The 2013 growing season is coming and we are working at creating a network of gardens that directly support Horizons Meals on Wheels clients!  Our first Horizons garden will be a joint effort with Rockwell Collins of Cedar Rapids!  We are looking forward to next years opportuinity however the amount of land that we can utilize depends on how much funding is obtained.  We are working toward raising money in order to pay and train a beginning farmer as well as for seed and other equipment.  You can help by giving your time, skills, land, tools, and monetary donations.

Values of Feed Iowa First

The statement that Iowa feeds the world can not be boasted until we ensure that Iowa is fed first.

All the people of Iowa are valued, no matter what their ability to feed themselves is.

Iowa's land is a priceless resource that belongs to its people, and should be protected for future generations.

The fact that Iowa has the best soil in the world means that there should not be a hungry man, woman, or especially a child.

Farming is hard work and Iowa's farm land should be accessible to those that wish to manage it.

Our land should not become a corporate-only domain.

Variety in our farming systems both in scale and in product creates a stronger Iowa.

A belief that it is dangerous both physically and spiritually to have a food system that is transportation based.

Knowing that the pride we have in our land and our farming heritage can be restored by restoring our ability to feed ourselves.
